Report: Washington State DL sucker punches teammate, booked on second degree assault

Well this is not exactly the kind of news Mike Leach wanted to deal with as Washington State hits the road in Pac 12 play this weekend. Freshman defensive lineman Emmitt Su’a-Kalio was charged with second degree assault after an incident inside the team’s locker room this week. The incident allegedly led to a broken jaw for another Cougar on the roster, who claims he was on the receiving end of a sucker punch from Su’a-Kalio.

According to a report by KXLY in Spokane, Washington says officers approached and worked with the Washington State coaching staff in bringing Su’a-Kalio to the police station Thursday, where he was arrested and booked for felony second degree assault. He was released on Friday following a court appearance. No charges have been filed yet, but police have until October 9 to file charges in the open case.

A brief statement from Washington State said “It is a team matter and we won’t comment on team matters.”

Washington State plays at California Saturday hoping to pick up their fourth win of the season. It would mark their second four-win season since 2007 and first under Leach.
